Ten people were trapped in a town surrounded by a blaze in Australia as wildfires killed at least one man and destroyed homes across the east of the country.
As Sydney had its hottest day in recorded history with temperatures of 114.4F (45.8C), fires ravaged bushland across the south-eastern state of Victoria. The state is soon to mark the four year anniversary of the Black Saturday fires which killed 173 people and were the worst natural disaster in the nation's history.
Police in Victoria confirmed an elderly man was found dead in his car in the town of Seaton, 120 miles from Melbourne.
It was the first fatality after more than a week of wildfires across the country, though a firefighter, Peter Cramer, died last week in the island state of Tasmania. The cause of his death remains unclear.
Towns across Victoria remain under threat from a fast-moving bushfire approximately 44,500 hectares in size.
"The conditions are deteriorating today," said a firefighter, Bill Johnstone.
